From Saravanan to Suriya - Suriya Fifteen years
Suriya, the heartthrob of South India. The massive status which he achieved in fifteen years didn’t happened in a day. Hard-work, Intelligence in choosing the script, Smartness by grabbing the opportunity paved the way for the majestic success . Some may say its all because of luck, remember there is a saying “Luck Favors the brave”
Though Suriya’s
father Sivakumar is a veteran actor, his family never had a thought of
making Suriya as an actor. To be frank his entry into K-Town happened
easily in 1997 through Vasanth’s “Neruku Ner” where he acted with his
close pal Vijay. The film was a hit but that doesn’t brought any big
offer for him, since many criticized his acting and cited that the film
was a hit because of Vijay & Vasanth. In many function Suriya
himself said while he was watching Neruku Ner in coimbatore one person
said “Padatha ketuthitiyey da”(you killed the film), but now can anyone
one say like this?
Almost all his films like Sandhipoma, SAC’s Periyanna where he acted along with Vijayakanth(cameo), Poovelam ketupaar,Uyiriley kalanthu failed miserably in box office. Again his combination with his friend Vijay in Friends (2011) gave him a hit , and Suriya’s acting was praised by the critics & audience at least to some extend.
Nandha was the film which showcased Suriya as a matured performer. Thanks to director Bala for sculpting Suriya. In fact even now Suriya openly accept that Nandha gave him so much confidence of doing any kind of character, the film was unanimously accepted by the critics, but it did only a average performance in Box-office.Initially the film went to Ajith but dropped later for unknown reasons.
Then came “Unnai ninaithu”, actually this offer went to Vijay ,since Vikraman’s story line was similar to Poove unakaga ,vijay was reluctant in doing it. Unnai ninaithu was the first solo box-office success for Suriya and his acting was accepted by both the critics and audience,then he acted in Shree which was a box- office failure.Then came Ameer’s “Mounam pesiyathe” which attained a critical acclaim and average performance in Box office
Khaka Khaka proved that Suriya can deliver Blockbuster and he can adopt himself to any kind of role, This was the first block buster for Suriya. Initially Goutham menon approached many heroes including Madhavan,Vijay,Ajith,Vikra
Then he acted again Bala’s ”Pithamagan” with Vikram, the film was a super hit and the critics were in full praise for Suriya’s comic performance in the film and it fetched him his fisrt film fare(supporting actor) his next film “Perazhagan” was a average venture in Box-office but his acting was well praised and earned him second Film fare(best actor),Maayavi was a average venture. .
Another learning experience for Suriya was Maniratnam’s Aaytha Ezhuthu, though the film was average in box office, it grabbed the attention of many directors since he essayed the role with 100 % perfection.
“Ghajini” was the film which leads to the super stardom which Suriya enjoys now, the film is one of the landmark film in tamil industry and even it was a big break for its director AR Murugadoss in both south & north. Suriya’s market in Andhrapradhesh started with Ghajini, It was a big hit in AP, eventhough Suriya was newcomer to Tollywood. The film was well received all over the country, Again this film went to Ajith,Madhavan initially and latter Suriya accepted it, this is called smartness in using the opportunity.
His films like Vel and Aaru with director Hari increased his fame in B and C centers and declared as hits, Then he acted in Sillunu oru Kadhal, the film didn’t fare well in Box office and it was a failure.
I would say “Varanam Ayiram” is the life time film for Suriya, this film is the major reason for his huge female fan following, from this film Suriya become the heartthrob of Kollywood. The critic were in full awe for Suriya’s performance. since it was very difficult to portray Teenage,middle age portions as a son and a matured father in a film.This film earned him his third film fare , A critic said “As for suriya a ostrich plume, a justified triumph”
Then came Ayan ,Directed by KV Anand this film was a stupendous success, it proved that Suriya is a star who is capable delivering blockbuster hits.His next film Aadhavan trashed by the critics and many thought the film will be a failure . But the film went on to become a hit and distributors felt that Suriya is a minimum guarantee hero After Rajini,Kamal ,Vijay & Ajith.
”Singam” released during a time when big hero’s mass films failed in box-office, but it rocked the box office and become one of the biggest blockbuster of the year.Later Suriya starred in Ram Gopal varma’s Ratha charithra,After working with Suriya ,RGV said Suriya is a complete actor in India.
7aam Arivu, opened with lot of criticism, since people felt the screenplay was not engaging, but the film earned different kind of audience and the film fared well at the Box office, even after trashed by the critics, this proved that Suriya’s star power was something big to rave about
